Fishermen in Brittany, France, wore blue-and-white striped shirts as work clothes on the high seas , so they could be more easily found in the water if someone fell overboard. The number of stripes also indicated which village the fisherman came from. 
 
Symbolizing Napoleon's victories, the French Navy's clothing featured 21 stripes from the 19th century onward. The rugged charm of these sailor shirts inspired Coco Chanel in 1913, and she made the striped pattern a recurring element in her collections. In the 1990s, Jean Paul Gaultier adopted the nautical fashion classic as the trademark of his label. 
 
In 1955, James Dean incorporated the iconic striped pattern into his rebellious look in the film "Because They Don't Know What They're Doing. " Pablo Picasso enjoyed wearing it while working in his studio, as did Kurt Cobain, sporting the grunge version at his performances.
